Information About this SCAM

An online refund scam commonly takes advantage of the cold-call method, cold-calling until a person who is vulnerable opens up. Scammers typically represent well-known companies or smaller companies offering products or services. The fraudster announces to the victim that the company owes the victim up to a specific amount either for a previously purchased good or for a service the provider can no longer provide.

In a similar version, a scammer impersonating an e-commerce website such as Amazon or eBay acts as if he's a victim when the victim reported his e-commerce site, such as Amazon or eBay, to have received a gift card. The victim is offered a refund for the ostensible fraudulent transaction.

The scammer will demand that the victim access their online banking page through remote desktop software, and then demand that the victim log in. On occasion, scammers have the victim fill out an online form with the amount they are supposedly owed in such a way that it appears to indicate that the victim filled it out incorrectly. The scammer blanks the victim's screen using the remote access software and uses the web development tools of the victim's browser to temporarily edit the online banking webpage to show a transfer into the victim's account.

While no transfer has actually taken place when the scammer restores the victim's ability to see the screen, the edited version of the webpage may convince them that the scammer did indeed transfer money into their account. Online refunds may also be considered a form of technical support scam, as they generally follow the format of the user's computer being accessed with remote access software.

Scammers often use previous victims of tech support scams to target other internet users. Some scammers imply that the technical support service they sold the victim earlier has gone out of business, which makes it impossible for them to fulfill or refund the "security services" that the victim paid for.
