Good evening, everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Android News Byte.
Today, I wanted to highlight a report talking about a potential investigation into OnePlus for how it stores user data collected within the United States.

United States to
The report from Reuters, first points out that two lawmakers, one democrat and one republican, who are both part of the House of Representatives committee on China were given a report from a commercial company. We aren't told the name of this company, but we are told they have determined OnePlus phones sold by Best Buy and Amazon for use on T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless networks are collecting and transmitting extensive user data to servers that are under Chinese jurisdiction.
And this data is said to be collected without explicit user consent.
This has resulted in the two lawmakers asking its Information and Communications Technology and Services program to investigate these OnePlus phones to determine what data is being collected.
Most of us are used to our smartphones collecting certain pieces of data on us.
But it's believed that the data sent to servers over in China could include "potential transfers of sensitive personal information and screenshots."
We aren't told if this investigation will happen. . .or what the results will be if OnePlus is guilty of the claim.
But we have seen lawmakers from the United States put a ban on products from companies like Huawei and ZTE in the past. . .so something like this could definitely be on the table here as well.
conclusion
The community is already speculating why such an investigation is warranted. Especially considering how much data is being collected by the likes of Apple, Google, and Samsung.
But it's clear to me that the issue here is about said data being sent to a server in China.
And that OnePlus will probably be fine as long as they host said data on a server in the United States. . .or at least in a country that is not under Chinese jurisdiction.
Personally, I would like to know what type of data is being collected. . .and why screenshots seem to be included in this data dump as well.
But maybe it will force OnePlus to actually make the process opt-in. . .rather than choosing to not disclose the action entirely.
But I know there are a lot of OnePlus users in the community here. So I would be curious to hear what you think about this news in the comments section below.
