The commonly overlooked topic of supply chains has suddenly taken center stage in the debate over the trajectory of our economy, and for good reason - global supply chain systems transcend and impact consumers, producers, corporates, policymakers, and market participants. At the heart of global logistics is the marine shipping industry, a massive and highly complex global network of actors, from shippers to ports and industry to governments, who are ultimately responsible for the intercontinental flow of goods - or as our guest Captain John Konrad, CEO of gCaptain puts it, “these mega-ships and ports are too big to fail.” Yet, are they failing? Lars Jensen, CEO of Vespucci Maritime, observes that the maritime shipping industry is not only unbroken but “the current mess is the result of everybody doing everything right.” Weston Nakamura hosts Konrad and Jensen in a tri-continental discussion, diving deep into the chaotic world of marine shipping and logistics from a multi-decade, international perspective to figure out how we got to where we are, and what lies ahead for global trade and commerce.
