Shopify Commerce Headless Architecture Tutorial for Ecommerce Developer & Merchandiser

Shopify is now the leading commerce platform designed for businesses of all sizes. Whether you sell online, on social media, in store, or out of the trunk of your car.
Shopify headless architecture consists of the 3 layers:
1. Storefront layer: What your customers interact with.
2. Service layer: Content and commerce management
3. Back-office: Tools such as an ERP and CRM (enterprise brands)


1. Storefront layer - Storefront layers consist of your website and other channels you sell products. you can deploy your frontend to any imaginable platform or device. e.g.
• Website,
• Native mobile app (IOS or Android),
• Point of Sale (POS)
• Social commerce
• Marketplaces (Amazon)
• Voice commerce

2. Service layer - The service layer is the backend of your eCommerce store where you manage your content and commerce.
• Content - Headless content management system is where you manage the content and pages of your store. Headless CMS deliver your content through an API directly to where you need it.
• Commerce - Commerce is managed with an eCommerce platform of your choice. Commerce manages customer, product, payment & orders information. You can use Shopify’s native checkout with a headless architecture.
• Third-party software - Layer to integrate with any third-party software to add functionality to your storefront layer such as smart site-search Algolia or review app Yotpo.

3. Back-office - Back-office layer is to integrate ERP tool to the headless commerce architecture.
