What the heck is going on with Pinterest Idea pins? Are they dead? I had to make an entire investigation and I'll tell you what I found so far and what's going to happen with Idea pins.
Pinterest rolled out a HUGE update but it doesn't look the same for all users yet! I asked in my FB group for my Pinterest program members, and from their answers I understand that most of the users in the United States and in some other countries can no longer create Idea pins. The update seems to go out quite randomly country-wise. I've got screenshots from a user in Taiwan and in India and Australia who have the same interface as users in the United States. I live in Portugal and my interface has changed but it still is not yet to the same final update.
So you know what? Just go to your Pinterest account, click Create, and see which options you get. On my account, I still have the option to Create Idea pins. What has changed for me is that I now also can add a link URL to an Idea pin as well as a pin title and description. Previously, we didn't have a field for a link on Idea pins.
And on this screenshot another user shared with me, you'll see the new interface after the full update. Wait what? There is no option to add an Idea pin at all!
I thought they just added links to Idea pins but now it looks like there are NO Idea pins anymore. What about the old Idea pins that took us so much time to create? Are they gone too? Let's find out!
Let's do a quick survey to know what Pinterest is really up to! Check this out on your account and let me know in the comments below where you live and if you still can create Idea pins or not anymore. And how do your old Idea pins show up if your account has been updated?
But if we like to look for some good news out of this confusing update… We can at least add links to our old Idea pins!
By the way, a quick pro tip - and I honestly hope I deserve a like on my video for this one!
Open your Pinterest Analytics, apply the filter to see only Idea pins, change the dates for the longest period available and you'll get the list of your top-performing old Idea pins.
What I suggest that you do is click Edit at least on your TOP-10 best Idea pins and see what we can do here. We can add links to our old pins!
Since these pins are outperforming other Idea pins on our account and they've been doing it for many months, it's worth the effort to go back and add links to these old Idea pins!

Pinterest published in their Newsroom a confusing announcement about his update. They said they are introducing an easier way to create pins - all types of pins will now have a unified flow instead of the different flows we used to have for Image pins, Video pins and Idea pins.
And they showed this example of an account that has only one button - Create a Pin and no option to create Idea pins.
So if this is in their Newsroom, I assume this change will be slowly rolled out to all the accounts around the world.
On the bright side, you should know that your old Idea pins will still remain on the platform, and as I mentioned, you can now even go back to your top Idea pins and add links to your website from them.
