The House of Commons begins debate on the federal government’s motion to confirm its declaration of an emergency under the Emergencies Act. The government invoked the measure on February 14, 2022, as part of an effort to resolve ongoing blockades and protests in several parts of the country. This is the first that time the Emergencies Act, which took effect in 1988, has been invoked. Taking part as the debate gets underway are Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, interim Conservative Leader Candice Bergen, deputy Conservative leader Luc Berthold, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Justice Minister David Lametti, Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair, Conservative emergency preparedness critic Dane Lloyd, Conservative infrastructure critic Andrew Scheer, Liberal MPs Kody Blois and Rachel Bendayan, and Conservative MPs Frank Caputo and Kerry-Lynne Findlay.
