Govt Launches Probe Against E-Commerce "Dark Patterns": Extra Charges on Cash-on-Delivery Under Scrutiny

The government has officially launched an investigation into e-commerce platforms for levying extra charges on Cash on Delivery (COD) orders. According to Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, this practice is being classified as a 'Dark Pattern'—a deceptive method used to charge customers hidden fees.The investigation follows social media complaints, particularly against platforms like Zepto, which added a "Cash Handling Fee" at checkout. The Minister has vowed to fast-track the probe and promised strict action against platforms found violating the rules. Extra COD charges, along with techniques like drip pricing and false urgency, are now punishable under the law.
