Although e-commerce businesses have no control over what customers buy, they do have control over the conditions of the sale.

Typically there are two ways e-commerce companies buy from vendors:

1. Buy the products and stock them in the warehouse.
2. SOR (Sale or return) - this gives e-commerce companies the option to return products back to the vendors in case they do not sell.

SOR often results in reduced gross margins, it also reduces risk and makes sure that businesses aren't left with products they can't sell.

Most fashion e-commerce companies have been moving to this model. Today, over 90% of all products at Flipkart Fashion are via SOR.
