CAROLINE WOODS: Just weeks after CEO Andy Jassy said artificial intelligence would lead to Amazon having a smaller workforce - the company unveiled its one millionth robot. Amazon is the largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robotics in the world.
The e-commerce giant began using robots in 2012 to help move inventory in its warehouses. But now some of those robots can lift more than 1,200 pounds of merchandise at a time. Others are fully autonomous and navigate the Amazon’s busy factory floors.
The company also announced a new generative AI model, called DeepFleet, that will improve its robot fleet travel efficiency by 10%.
In early June, Jassy sent a memo to employees about how AI will factor into the future of the company. He told workers Amazon will require “fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.” He added: “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce.”
