Want to build an e-commerce brand in 2021? What's it going to take? Ads and attention are becoming increasingly more competitive. So how do you build a successful e-commerce brand in 2021? I get a few types of people that reach out to me wanting to build digital brands. One is small business owners. Second, are people who want to start new brands or want to start companies. Third, are more traditional, bigger companies who are realizing now that their customers are online and they virtually have no presence. So you can't just out of nowhere say, hey, I'm going to build a digital brand.

Attention is more competitive than it's ever been, but building a digital brand is much more than just having an Instagram page or just running ads. I'm going to give you three steps today that you can take to have a better chance to have a successful digital brand. But just with anything else in terms of marketing, the audience ultimately decides whether your product, whether you're company, whether your brand, is going to be successful. What you can control is doing the best job you can of staying authentic and creating the most marketable entity possible to have unique touch points with your target audience.

The first step to building an e-commerce brand in 2021 is to develop brand positioning. Brand positioning is establishing the point of differentiation with your brand versus your competitors. People want to associate with products, services, brands that are for them.

You need to view your brand as serving as its own media entity. The success of your digital brand is entirely dependent on the relationships you have with the people that follow you. But what happens too often is brands don't have consistent content strategies, or if they post a lot of content, it's usually meaningless. Focus on having 20 to 30 unique touch points a month. This could be 5 blogs, 5 videos, 5 graphics,5 quick hitter posts, and then build out 15 to 17 of them the month before. You need to become a media entity.

The final point I'm making and how to build a successful e-commerce brand in 2021 is never sell. The one surefire way to never sell your product or service is to try and sell. You need to be focused on the unique impact that your product or service has on the people who associate themselves with it. What happens is when you just give when you add value, when you add entertainment, when you add unique, authentic impact with your target audience, what you'll see is in return they're going to give you their attention. The life cycle of a sale is much longer than you would think it is. And that's why it's important to never sell, because you could lose someone the first time they interact with your brand.

Obviously it's going to take more in those three tips that I gave you. But I think these three tips can serve as a helpful guideline and where you should focus in the beginning. Most importantly, realize that everything is turning digital. What's always going to help you to stand out is being able to take the authentic version of who you are, of what your brand is, and being able to scale that. I say it all the time, the most authentic brand is being yourself. Stay true to who you are, stay true to the value that you provide, and ultimately, over time, people will be able to notice that. In order to do that, you have to be patient., you have to be unique, and you have to be authentic.
