#Amazon and Walmart's #flipkart must face antitrust investigations ordered against them in #india the country's #supremecourt Court ruled on Monday, in a blow to the leading #ecommerce giants which had urged judges to quash the inquiries.

The Competition Commission of India (#CCI) ordered the investigation against the companies last year for allegedly promoting select sellers on their e-commerce platforms and using business practices that stifle competition.

The companies deny any wrongdoing and mounted legal challenges in lower courts and at the Supreme Court against the investigation, saying the CCI did not have enough evidence to pursue the matter.

A three-judge Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana, said companies like Amazon and Flipkart should volunteer for such investigations.

In the current antitrust case, filed by trader group Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh, the two companies face allegations of exclusive launches of mobile phones, promotion of select sellers on their websites, and deep discounting practices that drive out competition.

The government of India is watching this issue for a long and came up with a UPI-like solution. The Indian Government does not like consumer data going to foreign hands. Duopoly is a hurdle to the expansion of the market, though the market grew since the launch of shopping apps. The government has tasted success by launching #UPI, #Rupay. UPI and Rupay cards have been a great success in replacing foreign payment giants. The government has wanted to do the same with eCommerce bundled with national logistics policy and 5G.

The government said that the open public digital infrastructure framework entity Open Network for Digital Commerce (#ONDC) plans to start beta-testing the network with public users in limited areas. ONDC is a government-backed UPI-type protocol to promote an open platform for all aspects of the exchange of goods and services through electronic networks.

Through buyer apps that are a part of the ONDC network, customers in Bengaluru can place orders in the grocery and restaurant sectors.
There are buyer apps such as #Mystore, #PayTM, and #spicemoney then there are seller apps #Bizom, #Digiit, e-Samudaay, eVitalrx, Go Frugal, Growth Falcons, #Innobits, Mystore, #nStore, #SellerApp, #Ushop, and #Uengage, payment is processed via Protean eGov Technologies Ltd gateway and delivery is done by logistical services like #Dunzo, #Loadshare, and #shiprocket.

#eKart, #hdfcbank , #idfc Bank, and #Kotak Bank are in advanced stages of engagement and would likely go operational very soon.
ONDC consulted current ecosystem experts and examined best practices for adapting and evolving the best approach to building trust in an unbundled, decentralised network to build trust amongst consumers, sellers, and network participants (buyer apps, seller apps, and gateways) in the open network.

As many as 20 national-level organisations have confirmed investments in ONDC totalling Rs 255 crore. State Bank of India (#SBI), #UCO Bank, #HDFC Bank, #icicibank Bank, and Bank of Baroda have already committed capital.
On December 1, ONDC received its certificate of incorporation as a non-profit corporation led by the private sector.

ONDC's Chief Business Officer, Shireesh Joshi, told Financial Express that the goal is to be in over 100 cities with thousands of sellers onboarded.
Sellers cannot join the ONDC network directly, but must do so through seller platforms. According to Joshi, more buyers, sellers, and logistics players are developing their own apps to integrate with ONDC and will be live on the platform soon.

An ONDC is a network that uses an open protocol to allow buyers and sellers from different applications to transact with one another. ONDC, a government of India initiative, aims to be for retail what #qrcode is for payments.

A #beta launch is intended to provide early feedback for any necessary action before expanding ONDC further. ONDC was launched in five cities: Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Shillong, and Coimbatore.
The government hopes that by doing so, it will make the e-commerce landscape more inclusive. #paytm Mall, one of the stakeholders, agreed. "This is a significant milestone in the democratization of e-commerce in India," a company spokesperson said.

Currently, more than 500 companies, including small startups, are in discussions with ONDC about joining the network. Among those in advanced stages of integration are Blowhorn, Craftsvilla, CSC Grameen eStore, Ekart, Global Linker (Faiita IT Mall), Grab, HDFC Bank, IDFC First Bank, ITC Store, #kotakbank Bank, #Magicpin, #Microsoft, #Peppo, #Petpooja, #PhonePe, #Shopalyst, #Snapdeal, and #Zoho
